Clearing the airway is the most critical first step in the management of an obstructed airway because it addresses the immediate cause of respiratory distress or cardiac arrest. In emergencies, addressing the airway is prioritized over other interventions. While administering medication or performing chest compressions can be necessary in certain situations, they do not resolve the underlying issue of airway obstruction. Calling for help is also important but should occur alongside or after an attempt to clear the airway to ensure immediate risk to the patient is mitigated. Therefore, the immediate focus on clearing the airway is paramount in emergency care protocols.
